Client

In the last 20 years, Camp Tamarack, an annual week-long conference for young adults, has had a basic website that looked like a word document that allowed people to register, view information, and find links to photos and seminars from past years. In 2023, Camp Tamarack’s board decided that it was time for a updated website.

Approach

Camp Tamarack already had a existing logo that we decided to keep, but aside from that, they did not have a brand identity. This gave me a clean slate to work with when designing the new website. I designed typography guidelines and a basic colour palette to be used across the website and other digital outlets, such as their social media pages. I used Figma to design a prototype for the new public side of the website. I coded the design into HTML, CSS, and Javascript files, and we used them in conjunction with the existing PHP code for the back end of the website, which handles the registration data and other functions.

I also have been involved with designing merch for the camp since 2021. I have done the art direction and production for the Camp Tamarack stickers and the 2021 T-shirts. I also did art direction for the 2024 T-shirts, which was a collaborative project with Maddie Jude Design.

Results

Since the new website's completion, the amount of people who registered to attend Camp Tamarack has increased each year by 15% compared to previous years. To visit the live website, go to www.camptamarack.net.

I chose a black and white color palette with the addition of bright blue for buttons. We wanted the call-to-actions to stand out from the rest of the content. This is achieved by making them a bright color, unlike the rest of the site which is either black-and-white or imagery.

A challenge I faced that heavily influenced the color palette choice was that a lot of images on the website are from different times of day, different cameras, and are shooting different happenings around camp. With this variety of coloring in the photography, I kept coming back to that black background as it provided a blank canvas that all the photos visually pair well with, while still remaining on-brand with the direction we wanted the website to take.
